  Chairman’s Welcome

It has been my privilege to serve on the board of trustees since 2002 when I was co-opted to assist with the Information Centre building project.
I am married to Trish and our four children have launched their education at Green Bay School. Yvonne, our youngest, is currently in year five.
The role of the board of trustees can be misunderstood at times. It is not to assist the principal and senior management team in running the school. They are highly capable people and are totally responsible for the day-to-day running of the school. The board is however responsible to provide support and ensure the resources and policy framework required for success are available.

The board is responsible on behalf of the school community to set targets for achievement in the year and to monitor progress in relation to those targets. The strategic plan and annual plan documents set out these targets in more detail.
The board also reviews the school's policies on a regular basis and reviews different aspects of the school each year.

In 2007 we reviewed the relieving teacher system, student welfare and the technology areas of the curriculum. Each of these reviews revealed some areas in which the school is doing well and also some areas for improvement which are now being implemented.

The board has decided to review the following areas in 2008;

  • Maori student achievement/curriculum
  • English - Oral, viewing and presenting curriculum
  • The performance of the Board of Trustees
  • Arts Curriculum

The board comprises the principal, a staff trustee and six parent representative trustees who bring a wide range of skills and expertise to the table and represent the Green Bay School community very well. Their thoughtful contributions and hard work set the framework for the achievements you will read about elsewhere on this website.

I am very proud of the achievements of Green Bay School and suggest that you don't take my word for it but go on to read about the successes being achieved in the wider community in academic, cultural and sporting pursuits. I also encourage you to take the time to read our latest Education Review Office report. This report gives praise (where praise is certainly due) for the skills and professional approach brought to our school by Jude, our principal, the management team and staff.
